Kā te Rama Switched On Group Rallies Behind Gumboot Friday to Support Youth Mental Health
4 November 2024Kā te Rama Switched On Group has thrown its full support behind Gumboot Friday, a vital kaupapa by I Am Hope that raises pūtea for youth counselling services. This cause resonates deeply with our organisation, particularly given the high suicide rates in the construction industry. By championing campaigns like Gumboot Friday, we're taking active steps to positively impact mental health for the next generation of tradespeople in Aotearoa.
Our Hawke's Bay team focused on raising awareness through a community-centered approach. We hosted a BBQ and welcomed local wellness centre O-Studio to share their wisdom. The event provided valuable insights into the benefits of services such as ice baths and flotation therapy, along with practical tips for maintaining good mental health. This mahi tahi underscored the importance of self-care, especially in high-pressure industries like construction.
Meanwhile, our Christchurch team took a more playful approach, organising a gumboot throwing competition. This engaging activity not only brought our whānau together but also served as a fun way to raise awareness for the cause. The event was a resounding success, with our kaimahi showcasing some impressive throwing skills.
Dominic Wescott, Switched On Housing North Island General Manager, emphasises the significance of this initiative: "Supporting the hauora of our team and the wider community is incredibly important to us. Gumboot Friday is a great way to make a difference where it counts by getting support to our rangatahi and equipping them with tools they can take with them through life."
At Kā te Rama Switched On Group, we're committed to fostering a supportive and healthy work environment and we take pride in backing initiatives that make mental health resources more accessible and contribute to a brighter future for our young people. Our support for mental health in the construction industry is an ongoing commitment, and we encourage others in the sector to get involved and make a difference.
It's not just about one day or one event; it's about building a culture of care and support that extends far beyond our immediate workplace.
